NYC Vegan Bake Sale for Haiti

The NYC Vegan Bake Sale for Haiti raised close to $5000 this past weekend! Home-bakers and crafters from around the area made baked goods and crafts for the event. We were also happy to donate to the event! Visit the Flickr page for photos.

Bark in the Park

This past Sunday, we visited Liberty State Park in Jersey City for Liberty Humane Society’s Bark in the Park event.

Every year hundreds of dogs and their owners gather in Liberty State Park for this event, along with dozens of vendors of dog-related products. We had a lot of fun at the event with our pitbull/boxer mix, Rex. We were happy to meet some of the folks behind Pinups for Pitbulls, an organization that works to educate the public about the history and temperament of the American Pit Bull. They try to raise awareness about Breed Specific Legislation and Breed-Specific abuse, and to raise funds for bully-breed-friendly rescues and dogs in need. Pitbulls are a very misunderstood breed, and since our own dog, Rex, is a pitbull mix, we appreciate the work that groups like this do to raise awareness! Unfortunately certain countries like the UK, and even some cities within the US have placed bans on pitbulls due to their bad reputation. Even PETA, who claims to be an animal rights organization, has recommended against adopting pitbulls. We think it’s obvious that any dog, of any breed, can become violent, and studies show that it has much more to do with the dog’s environment and supervision than it does with their breed. If you are considering adopting a dog, don’t overlook the abundance of pitbulls at your local animal shelter. They are very loving, loyal and protective dogs.

Rutherford Labor Day Street Fair

We’re a little late getting these photos up, but we had a blast at the Rutherford Labor Day Street Fair. Every year on Labor Day, Park Avenue in Rutherford is shut down and transformed into a huge flea market. The event usually draws 20,000-30,000 people to our small town, so it’s obviously always a busy day for us.

Our great friend Anthony Quintano of Quintano Media was around photographing the whole sha-bang. Here are a few photos from the fair. For more, visit Anthony’s Flickr photostream or his website.

Cupcakefest Raffle Prizes

Since we’re getting close to Cupcakefest now, we figured it’s time to start posting about more of the awesome prizes we’ll be raffling off. Remember, all the proceeds from our raffles will be going to the Liberty Humane Society to help feed and care for their animals. Without further ado, here’s one of our favorite of the prizes:

Flip Mino Video Camera with Sweet Avenue logo

What we’ve got here is an awesome Flip Mino video camera. What’s even more awesome about this one is that it’s emblazoned with our new logo! This little guy records awesome video at the touch of a button to its internal memory. It has an internal rechargeable battery, and a built-in USB connector to plug into your computer. There’s also software included for one-touch uploading to YouTube and MySpace. It’s pretty awesome, and one of you lucky people is going to win it (along with even more prizes, to be announced soon!).

More info available at the Flip Mini website.

PPK Meetup at Sweet Avenue!

Last weekend, members of The Post Punk Kitchen (a vegan message board) had a meetup in Rutherford. This meetup was at the nearby Rutherford Pancake House, which has an awesome vegan menu that we, here at Sweet Avenue, can vouch for. Suffice it to say that we’re quite pleased they opened up a mere 4 blocks away.

The PPK'ers

After they hit up the Rutherford Pancake House, they dropped by here for dessert! We’ve met many of them before, and some of them are among our most awesome regular customers, so it was great to see them all together for a while. They even managed to bring along JoJo (the pink-haired girl) from the UK! I think she’s officially traveled the farthest for our cupcakes, so far (Asians, Australians and Pacific Islanders, get cracking!), which is awesome!

It was a lot of fun hanging out with you folks, and we hope you’ll all stop by again soon!
